As the wise Sailimai answers the riddles, she teaches the emperor to understand his own misdoings. What is “more black than the bottom of a pan?” the emperor wants to know. In her answer, Sailimai refers to the Emperor’s own heart so filled with avarice that he is willing to kill a man over a vase. The emperor continues, “What is clearer than a mirror?” “Knowledge in one’s mind.” Such is Sailimai’s knowledge as she responds to the riddles so clearly. What is “harder than steel?” Sailimai talks about people who unify against injustice, just as she is doing by standing up for her father-in-law. What is as “large as the sea?” “A virtuous woman’s heart” Sailimai has such a heart. Her virtue defeats the emperor’s cruelty.
